
Forest wins 3-0 at Man City in FA Cup |
LONDON (AP) -Nottingham Forest won 3-0 at high-spending Manchester City for the biggest upset in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday. In another surprise, Southend played to a 1-1 draw at Chelsea, scoring the tying goal during injury time. Premier League leader Liverpool won 2-0 at Preston, with Albert Riera scoring in the first half and captain Steven Gerrard setting up the second goal by substitute Fernando Torres in injury time. Gerrard has been charged with assault in a nightclub brawl and is to appear in court Jan. 23. Nathan Tyson and Rob Earnshaw had first-half goals for Forest, which plays in the League Championship. Joe Garner scored in the 75th minute to complete an embarrassing result for Manchester City, which is also struggling in the Premier League despite being bought by a wealthy Abu Dhabi business group three months ago. "I know exactly what is needed here,'' Manchester City manager Mark Hughes said. "The work we do on a day-to-day basis makes players better. They have to be brave enough to perform in matches. Today some were guilty of not doing that.'' Peter Clarke scored during injury time on his 27th birthday for Southend, a modest League One club. Salomon Kalou gave Chelsea the lead in the 31st minute. Stoke tumbled 2-0 at League One Hartlepool, which got second-half goals from Michael Nelson and David Foley. League One Peterborough drew 1-1 at West Bromwich Albion, which is last in the Premier League, and defending champion Portsmouth also faces a replay after being held to a scoreless tie at home by Championship club Bristol City. There were only three matchups of Premier League teams. Sunderland edged Bolton 2-1 and Hull and Newcastle will need a replay after a 0-0 draw. On Friday, Tottenham downed Wigan 3-1. Manchester United, which has won a record 11 FA Cup titles, plays at Championship side Southampton on Sunday. --- MADRID, Spain (AP) - Barcelona extended its unbeaten streak to 16 matches in the Spanish league with a 3-1 home win against Mallorca. Barcelona's 14th win in 17 matches gave it an 11-point lead in the standings ahead of Valencia, which won at home, 3-1 against Atletico Madrid. Sevilla could overtake Valencia if it beats last-place Osasuna on Sunday. Valencia was on 33 points, two ahead of Sevilla. Mallorca scored first through Aritz Aduriz, and Barcelona's reply came from Thierry Henry, Andres Iniesta and Yaya Toure in the league's first game following the annual winter break. David Villa and David Silva scored in a five-minute span for Valencia to lead 2-0. but Atletico's Diego Forlan halved the deficit in first-half injury time. Silva secured the result with a powerful left-footed shot from 10 yards outside the box in the 69th. --- ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Luciano Galletti scored on a first-half penalty kick to give Olympiakos Piraeus a 1-0 win at Asteras, extending its lead in the Greek league. Olympiakos has 39 points from 16 games. That's nine more than PAOK Thessaloniki, which hosts OFI Crete Sunday. Panathinaikos Athens is third with 29 points and is home against crosstown rival AEK on Sunday. --- GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) - Celtic tied Dundee United 2-2, missing a chance to go 10 points ahead of rival Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premier League. Two goals by Georgios Samaras put the defending champions ahead 2-0, but Paul Dixon and Warren Feeney scored to salvage a draw at Celtic Park. Celtic leads with 51 points from 21 games.
