Fernandes out for season with leg break |
VALENCIA, Spain (AP) -Valencia midfielder Manuel Fernandes will miss the rest of the season with a broken leg despite playing more than 75 minutes of a Spanish league game while carrying the injury. The Portugal international fractured a bone in his left leg in the 15th minute of Valencia's 4-1 win over Getafe on Sunday. Fernandes stayed on to play the full 90 minutes and only discovered the break after medical scans were done on Monday when the player complained of some discomfort. "The truth is that it hurts a bit, but I was able to play comfortably,'' Fernandes told reporters. "Now, after knowing what happened to me, I don't know how I could stand. Clearly I'll miss the rest of the season.'' Fernandes will undergo surgery to repair the break on Tuesday. Fernandes has featured in all but two of Valencia's 29 league games and has scored two goals as the club fights to finish in the top-four to clinch a place in next season's Champions League. Valencia currently lie fifth, two points behind Villarreal. ![]() |
