Ferdinand out of England's qualifier at Kazakhstan |
LONDON (AP) -Rio Ferdinand miss miss England's World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan on Saturday because of the calf injury that troubled him in the closing stages of the domestic season. The Manchester United center back, who left the team hotel in Watford on Tuesday and will not travel with the squad, could return for the next qualifier at home to Andorra on June 10. Bolton's Gary Cahill was called up to the England squad for the first time as Ferdinand's replacement. "I've had a good season and I've worked really hard,'' the 23-year-old Cahill said. "I've been in the provisional squad twice before and then this third time I was included once again, so I'm obviously delighted to get the call. "Making the squad is an achievement that I'm very proud of.'' Cahill joins Matthew Upson and Joleon Lescott as the players competing for a place alongside captain John Terry at center back for the match in Almaty. ![]() |
