Mosquera goal gives America a 1-0 win over Chivas |
MEXICO CITY (AP) -Colombian defender Aquivaldo Mosquera scored in the third minute Sunday as America edged archrival Chivas 1-0 in the Mexican Apertura championship. Mosquera's header off Pavel Pardo's cross lifted the Eagles to 25 points and the third best record in the tournament. Competition leader Toluca lost 2-1 Friday to Estudiantes and will remain on top with 26 points, while Morelia is still on second place with 25 points and the same goal average as America, who is behind only because of tiebreakers. "We missed a few chances but 1-0 is enough for the win, which gets us closer to the first goal, which is to qualify for the playoffs'', America midfielder Angel Reyna said. America, which is trying to break a two-year drought without postseason play, ended a four-game losing streak against Chivas. Chivas has lost back-to-back matches and remains on 15 points, as the third best team in Group 1. Earlier, Pablo Barrera and Ismael Iniguez scored two goals in three minutes as the Pumas rallied to defeat Monterrey 2-1. Chilean striker Humberto Suazo put Rayados ahead in the 72nd, but Barrera equalized in the 83 and Iniguez' header in the 86th gave the Pumas their second home win of the season and a very slim chance of qualifying for the playoffs. Pumas, with 11 points, need to win their remaining four matches to have any chance of retaining their title. In other results, it was: Queretaro 2, Cruz Azul 1; Jaguares 1, Santos 1; Tigres 1, San Luis 0; Pachuca 1, Cd. Juarez 0; Atlante 2, Atlas 0. ![]() |
