MONACO (AP) -- Roger Federer has married his longtime girlfriend Mirka Vavrinec in his Swiss hometown and shed tears of happiness.
Federer, who has lost his top ranking to Nadal as well as his Wimbledon crown and this year's Australian Open final, married Vavrinec in a small ceremony in Basel on Saturday that he had managed to keep secret.
Federer said on Tuesday, speaking about the wedding for the first time, "A few tears here and there. It was nice."
Federer broke down in tears when he gave his post-match speech after losing 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-2 in Melbourne for a fifth straight defeat to the Spaniard.
This time, Federer told reporters, "It was just nice to know that she loves me so much, I love her so much. It was just a very nice day. We had perfect sky, perfect weather."
