The Chicago Cubs have signed Xavier Nady to a one-year contract, SI.com has learned, while the Oakland A's have signed Ben Sheets.

Both players are coming off major injuries. Nady missed all but seven games last season because of Tommy John surgery while Sheets missed the entire year with a torn flexor tendon.

Nady got $3.3 million plus $2 million in incentives based on games played.

Sheets' contract is for about $10 million plus performance bonuses, SI.com has learned. News of Sheets' deal was first reported by CBSSports.com.

Nady, 31, is a career .280 hitter in parts of eight seasons with the Padres, Mets, Pirates and Yankees. He had his best season in 2008, when he hit .305 with 25 home runs and 97 RBIs between the Pirates and Yankees. He was the Yankees' Opening Day rightfielder in 2009 before going down with the injury that required the second Tommy John surgery of his career.

Sheets, also 31, is 86-83 in his eight-year career, all of which had been spent with the Brewers and which has been affected by repeated injuries. In 2008, Sheets went 13-9 with a 3.09 ERA in 31 starts, the only season since 2005 in which he has made at least 25 starts. Sheets started the All-Star Game in 2008, his fourth appearance in the Midsummer Classic.
