The Yankees have signed outfielder Marcus Thames to a non-roster contract, league sources tell SI.com. Thames should compete with Randy Winn and Brett Gardner for playing time.

Thames base salary will be $900,000 with incentives if he makes the team.

Thames hit .252 with 13 home runs and 36 RBIs with Detroit last year. He broke in with Yankees in 2002, and hit his first home run off Randy Johnson. He went to the Rangers in 2003 and spent the past six years with the Tigers. Thames has played 252 of his 319 career outfield games in leftfield. He is the second ex-Tigers outfielder the Yankees have added this offseason, having traded for Curtis Granderson earlier.
