Mike Jacobs signed a minor league contract with the Mets on Wednesday, has confirmed. The deal pays $900,000 base if he's in the majors plus $1.15 million in incentives for possible total of $2.05 million.

Jacobs should have a shot at decent playing time, as he joins the first-base mix with Daniel Murphy and Fernando Tatis. Mets great Keith Hernandez is tutoring Murphy this week, but some Mets people believe that another year of seasoning may be in order before he's ready to handle the position exclusively for a full season.

Jacobs, 29, batted ..228/.297/.401 in his one season with the Royals in 2009, to go with 19 home runs and 61 RBIs. He came up with the Marlins, and had a 32-homer, 93-RBI year in 2008 before being traded to Kansas City.
