CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Charlotte coach Alan Major has begun filling out his first staff with the hiring of assistants Ryan Odom and Orlando Vandross.

Major also announced Thursday that he is retaining director of basketball operations Rob Perron.

Odom leaves Virginia Tech, where he was on coach Seth Greenberg's staff for seven seasons. Odom is the son of former Wake Forest and South Carolina coach Dave Odom. Ryan Odom's brother, Lane, is a former Charlotte assistant.

Vandross has spent the past 13 seasons as an assistant at Boston University, and will help with the 49ers' recruiting efforts in the Northeast. Major and Vandross have a friendship spanning 12 years.

A former Ohio State assistant, Major was introduced this week to replace the fired Bobby Lutz.
