WAC Conference Report
Can Fresno or Nevada stop Boise? Is Kellen Moore about to embark on a Heisman run? Will Idaho repeat its 2009 success? SI.com's 2010 conference reports continue with Brett LoGiurato's WAC breakdown.

How They'll Finish

  Conference Overall
Boise St. 8-0 11-1
Fresno State 6-2 8-4
Nevada 6-2 9-4
Idaho 4-4 8-5
Utah St. 4-4 6-6

  Conference Overall
Hawaii 4-4 5-8
San Jose St. 3-5 4-9
Louisiana Tech 1-7 2-10
New Mexico St. 0-8 1-11

Offensive MVP

QB
Kellen Moore
2009 Season Stats: 3,536 pass yards, 39 pass TDs, 3 INT, 1 rush TD
2010 Projected Stats: 3,700 pass yards, 42 pass TD, 6 INT, 2 rush TD
Moore and Houston's Case Keenum enter the season as rare Heisman frontrunners from non-BCS programs. And with good reason: Moore has led Boise to a 26-1 mark as a starter, including a 2009 Fiesta Bowl win. He's extremely efficient under center, throwing just three picks to 39 TDs in '09 and breaking the NCAA single-season record for lowest percentage of passes intercepted (0.69). If Boise can survive nonconference matchups with Virginia Tech and Oregon State, expect the Heisman hype to grow.

Defensive MVP

DE
Dontay Moch
2009 Season Stats: 61 tackles, 20 for loss, 6.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles
2010 Projected Stats: 77 tackles, 18 for loss, 8 sacks, 3 forced fumbles
Moch, the reigning WAC Defensive Player of the Year, is the key returnee for a shaky defense that in '09 ranked 96th nationally in total defense, including 119th out of 120 teams against the pass. But Moch was a bright spot, ranking eighth nationally with 20 tackles for loss (he registered an eye-popping 4.5 against UNLV). Head coach Chris Ault brought in Andy Buh from Stanford to overhaul the defense, and in Moch, Buh has a disruptive force around whom he can build his unit.

Three Key Nonconference Games

Cincinnati at Fresno State
Saturday, September 4
10 p.m. ET (ESPN2)
Brian Kelly's departure for Notre Dame may have robbed this contest of a bit of its luster, but Cincinnati is still a BCS-conference opponent. A win against quarterback Zach Collaros and the high-powered Bearcats would be another benchmark for the Bulldogs' program.

Boise State vs. Virginia Tech
Monday, Sept. 6
8 p.m ET (ESPN)
Boise won't have to wait for its first -- and biggest -- test of the season. The matchup at Washington's FedEx Field is being billed as "neutral," but the Broncos will have to travel a ways for the primetime clash between preseason top 10 teams.

Oregon State at Boise State
Saturday, Sept. 25
TBD (ABC/ESPN)
Test No. 2 for Boise comes against a Pac-10 opponent, though Kellen Moore and Co. will be playing in the comforts of Bronco Stadium this time. Boise's defense will be tasked with stopping the Rodgers brothers -- running back Jacquizz and receiver James -- but if the Broncos can top the Beavers and Hokies, the national championship talk will really heat up.

Conference Game of the Season

Boise State at Nevada
Friday, Nov. 26
10:15 p.m. ET (ESPN2)
Boise's toughest in-conference challenges will likely come from Fresno State and Nevada, but the Broncos have to hit the road to battle the Wolf Pack. Like in 2009, this could be the matchup that determines the conference champion.

Did You Know?

The WAC trio of Boise State, Hawaii and Fresno State has combined for 253 wins since the 2001 season. That's the third most of any FBS grouping, ranking ahead of the ACC, Pac-10, Big Ten and Big East.
Boise State has won 112 games over the past 10 seasons, the most by any FBS team in the nation in any decade since 1900.
Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick became just the second player in NCAA history to post consecutive 2,000-yard passing and 1,000-yard rushing seasons.
