Elite DE Jeffcoat to commit to UT

A source close to Jackson Jeffcoat confirmed on Thursday night that the Plano West defensive end will verbally commit to the University of Texas. A 10 A.M. press conference has been scheduled at Jeffcoat's high school to make public the decision.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder is the son of former NFL star Jim Jeffcoat, who played 15 years in the league. The younger Jeffcoat, the consensus top player in the state of Texas and a U.S. Army All-American, listed Houston, Oklahoma and Texas as finalists. He took his official visit to Oklahoma last week, where his twin sister Jacqueline, a standout basketball player, has verbally committed.

But Jeffcoat's overall comfort level in Austin led him to pick Texas, the source indicated. He made his decision this past Wednesday after fully evaluating the final three programs still in contention. An AP and honors class student, Jeffcoat was one of the nation's most prized remaining recruits. All the programs still in the mix for Jeffcoat had indicated he would be in contention for early playing time as a freshman, the source said.

Before his NFL career, the elder Jeffcoat attended Arizona State University, a program which Jackson visited this past fall. His father is currently part of the coaching staff at the University of Houston.
