SI.com's list of the Greatest American Boxing Movies was selected by a blue-ribbon panel composed of Teddy Atlas (Boxing analyst, ESPN), Richard Brody (Film critic, The New Yorker), Richard Deitsch (Senior editor, SI.com), J. Hoberman (Film critic, Village Voice), Will Leitch (Founding editor, Deadspin), Larry Merchant (Boxing commentator, HBO Sports), Joe Morgenstern (Film critic, Wall Street Journal), Richard O'Brien (Senior editor, Sports Illustrated), Bob Papa (Boxing commentator, HBO Sports), Joe Santoliquito (Managing editor, The Ring magazine), Bert Sugar (Boxing historian) and Peter Travers (Film critic, Rolling Stone).

The panelists followed two ground rules. First, both documentary and feature films were eligible, since the primary criterion of compelling storytelling can be achieved within either format. Second, a film can't merely take place on the periphery of the boxing world, which precludes films like Killer's Kiss, On The Waterfront and Pulp Fiction.

Here are 20 movies that made the preliminary cut, but didn't make the final list (listed alphabetically):

Honorable Mention
The Big Timer (1932) The Greatest (1977)
Blue Blood (2006) The Hammer (2007)
City for Conquest (1940) The Joe Louis Story (1953)
The Contender (1944) Monkey on My Back (1957)
The Crowd Roars (1938) Phantom Punch (2008)
