Kelly wants Jumbotron at Notre Dame Stadium
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- A JumboTron is the next item on Brian Kelly's wish list for Notre Dame Stadium.
Notre Dame home games will never be mistaken for rowdy - the atmosphere usually matches the 81-year-old stadium's age - and the second-year Irish coach would like to liven things up.
Notre Dame played its first night game in 21 years Saturday against USC, and commercial music was pumped in over the P.A. system, including Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train" when the defense faced third down.
A massive scoreboard that can show video replays is a logical progression, Kelly said Wednesday night.
"We think that's going to be something that adds to the atmosphere, too," Kelly said.
It runs counter to Notre Dame's conservative tradition, though.
Notre Dame has long resisted adopting the in-game entertainment that is the norm at almost every other stadium - professional and college - in the country, preferring to keep the focus on the game itself.
The stadium, originally built in 1930, didn't even have permanent lights until it was renovated before the start of the 1997 season. But fans have come to expect those "extras," and it certainly wouldn't hurt as a recruiting tool with players who have grown up surrounded by electronics and digital technology.
Asked when he'd like to see a new scoreboard in place, Kelly joked that they were trying to get it done by next week.
"No, all those things are the progression that we're working to," he said.
But stadium improvements, be it a JumboTron or artificial turf, won't be Kelly's call to make.
His comments won't come as any surprise to the administration, though.
"They know how I feel," Kelly said. "I don't want to beat a dead horse with it, either. But I think it's pretty clear we want to continue to create a great atmosphere."
