BRUSSELS (AP) -- Christoph Daum has been named coach of FC Brugge to revive the fortunes of a club lagging in fourth position in the Belgian league.

Brugge fired Dutch coach Adri Koster last week after four consecutive losses and had been looking for a high-profile replacement. The 13-time Belgian champions announced Wednesday Daum signed a contract until mid-2013.

The 58-year-old German won the Bundesliga with Stuttgart in 1992, as well as titles in Turkey with Besiktas and Fenerbahce. An admission of cocaine use cost Daum the chance of becoming Germany coach in 2000 and forced his removal from Bayer Leverkusen.

He worked for Eintracht Frankfurt as an interim coach at the end of last season but was not retained when the club was relegated.
