PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired former All-Star first baseman Gaby Sanchez from the Miami Marlins in a deal announced right before Tuesday's trade deadline.

The Pirates also got minor league pitcher Kyle Kaminska for minor league outfielder Gorkys Hernandez and Pittsburgh's extra draft pick in 2013 given to financially weaker teams.

The 28-year-old Sanchez was having a disappointing year. He was batting only .202 with three home runs and 17 RBIs, and had been demoted to Triple-A in May for nearly a month.

Sanchez hit 19 home runs in each of the previous two seasons and was an NL All-Star last year.

Pittsburgh is chasing Cincinnati for the NL Central title and doing well in the wild-card race.

The Marlins recently traded away star infielder Hanley Ramirez and pitcher Anibal Sanchez. Miami got three-time All-Star Carlos Lee from Houston in early July, but the first baseman did little damage for his new team.

Kaminska, a 23-year-old righty, was a combined 6-4 with one save and a 5.20 ERA in Triple-A and Double-A.

Hernandez had two hits and batted .083 for Pittsburgh this season. The 24-year-old hit .257 with two homers and 25 RBIs in Triple-A.

ST. LOUIS (AP) The St. Louis Cardinals acquired bullpen help at the trade deadline, getting right-hander Edward Mujica from the Miami Marlins for 2010 first-round pick Zack Cox.

The 28-year-old Mujica (Moo-HEE'-kah) is 0-3 with a 4.38 ERA and two saves in 41 games and has held right-handed hitters to a .211 batting average. Last year he was 9-6 with a 2.96 ERA.

The 23-year-old Cox was batting .254 with nine homers and 30 RBIs at Triple-A Memphis. He was the 25th overall pick in the 2010 amateur draft out of Arkansas and jumped from Class A Palm Beach to Double-A Springfield last season.

The Cardinals will announce a corresponding roster move after Mujica arrives in Colorado for a series against the Rockies that began Tuesday night.
