CHICAGO (AP) The Chicago White Sox have recalled right-hander Dylan Axelrod from Double-A Birmingham.

The 27-year-old Axelrod is 2-2 with a 4.93 ERA in 11 appearances with the White Sox this season, including seven starts. He tossed a career-high 7 1-3 innings in his last appearance with Chicago on Aug. 29 at Baltimore, allowing one run and three hits to earn the victory.

Manager Robin Ventura said Axelrod will serve in a long relief role, but there are instances down the road where he could be used to give young arms like Chris Sale and Jose Quintana an extra day of rest.

The White Sox hosted Minnesota on Tuesday night. They entered play with a one-game lead over the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central.
