ATLANTA (AP) -- The Atlanta Braves had 16 position players on their roster for Friday's wild-card game against St. Louis and kept three starting pitchers active.

Manager Fredi Gonzalez said he wanted to have Tim Hudson and Mike Minor available in case starter Kris Medlen had unexpected problems in the bullpen.

Right-hander Cristhian Martinez, who appeared in 54 games and often was effective in long relief, was not on the 25-man roster. Joining closer Craig Kimbrel in the bullpen were left-handers Luis Avilan, Eric O'Flaherty and Jonny Venters and right-handers Chad Durbin and Cory Gearrin.

Catcher David Ross was expected to start instead of Brian McCann, who has a sore shoulder and sore knee. A third catcher, J.C. Boscan, also was on the roster.

The roster included eight infielders and five outfielders.

ATLANTA (AP) -- The St. Louis Cardinals are carrying 10 pitchers, one more than the Braves, on their 25-man roster for their NL wild-card game against Atlanta.

Kyle Lohse is starting Friday. Manager Mike Matheny has only one other starting pitcher, Lance Lynn, active for the game. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez has three starting pitchers on his roster.

The Cardinals are carrying three catchers, with Bryan Anderson and Tony Cruz available behind starter Yadier Molina.

Marc Rzepczynski and Sam Freeman are the only left-handers in the Cardinals' bullpen.

Matheny is sticking with second baseman Daniel Descalso and shortstop Pete Kozma as his starting middle-infield combination.

Winning teams in the wild-card games can reset their rosters for the division series.

Rangers stack bullpen vs. Orioles

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- The Texas Rangers are carrying 11 pitchers on their roster for their win-or-go-home wild-card game against Baltimore.

Ryan Dempster is the only rotation member not on the 25-man roster the Rangers set for Friday night's game. Dempster started the regular-season finale Wednesday.

If the two-time defending AL champion Rangers beat Baltimore, they would advance to the AL division series against the New York Yankees and then get to reshuffle their roster before that series starts Sunday.

Yu Darvish starts against the Orioles, and has pitched into at least the seventh inning in his last nine games. But Texas manager Ron Washington has 10 pitchers to pick from when Darvish needs relief.

The Rangers have three catchers, six infielders and five outfielders available against the Orioles.

Orioles have seven righties in bullpen

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter has 10 relief pitchers to choose from in their win-or-go-home AL wild card game at Texas.

The Orioles' 25-man roster for Friday night's game includes seven right-handers and three left-handers behind lefty starter Joe Saunders, who has never won at Rangers Ballpark.

The wild card winner advances to play in the AL division series against the New York Yankees, and would host the first two games. The 25-man roster can be redone before then.

For the Rangers game, Baltimore had two catchers, six infielders, five outfielders and designated hitter Jim Thome.
