MADRID (AP) - Spain has selected two-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador to lead its team at the road world championships.

Spain coach Jose Luis De Santos announced on Tuesday that Contador, who won the Spanish Vuelta last weekend after a doping ban, will head a team that includes Vuelta runner-up Alejandro Valverde and third-place finisher Joaquin Rodriguez.

De Santos said that 2008 Olympic champion Samuel Sanchez's place in the squad depends on the speed of his recovery from injuries sustained this summer.

The other members are three-time world champion Oscar Freire, Jonathan Castroviejo, Pablo Lastras, Juan Antonio Flecha, and Dani Moreno.

The championships begin on Sept. 15 in Limburg, Netherlands.
