Could Clippers lure Phil Jackson?

Credit Amar'e Stoudemire for willing to be a team player. [Stoudemire] would accept a role as the New York Knicks' sixth man if asked, two sources with knowledge of Stoudemire's thinking told ESPNNewYork.com. "All he cares about right now is helping the team and winning," said one source, who has been around Stoudemire regularly in recent weeks. "He'd be fine with coming off the bench if that's what they want." Stoudemire hasn't spoken with reporters since suffering a left knee injury in the preseason. He's been rehabilitating his knee following arthroscopic surgery for the past four weeks and is expected to miss at least another two weeks. There has been speculation about what role Stoudemire will play once he returns. (FOX Sports) Comment

Jeter packing on weight?

Thanks to Derek Jeter's stroll in Florida, Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera aren't the only members of the core four making headlines this week. The ankle we knew about. The gut, not so much. [Jeter] was spotted at a hotel on South Beach in Miami [Thursday] wearing a walking boot to protect the left ankle he broke in the playoffs last season. Yet the 38-year-old Jeter also seemed to be carrying another burden -- some extra weight hanging from the Yankees shortstop's normally fit frame. According to general manager Brian Cashman, Jeter has been in a non-weight bearing situation and will continue to be until January. That means if he has been able to work out at all, it has been limited to upper body because he can't put any weight on his left foot. (New York Post) Comment

Petersen has $80,000 bonus riding on weekend

As the coaching carousel picks up speed, Chris Petersen's name will likely come up in speculation. [Petersen] has earned a one-year extension because the Broncos won eight games. That puts him under contract through 2017. He will receive an $80,000 bonus if the Broncos win this week (conference title) or a $35,000 bonus if they lose (bowl berth). His buyout is $750,000. He is obligated to coach the Broncos through the bowl game even if he accepts another job. As schools line up to fight over the latest hot head coaches in college football, they might do better to chase assistants. Of the 25 coaches in the latest Bowl Championship Series standings, 15 have not been head coaches at another college or in the NFL. (New York Post) Comment
