DENTON, Texas (AP) -- North Texas football coach Dan McCarney says he expects to recover from a stroke in time to lead the team through spring drills.

McCarney said Tuesday in a statement provided by the school that he felt his left side go numb Sunday and was taken to a hospital. Doctors later confirmed he had a stroke.

McCarney has been moved out of intensive care but remains hospitalized. He says that he doesn't expect to have any long-lasting effects from the stroke. He says he looks forward to rejoining his staff and players.

The 58-year-old McCarney became coach at North Texas in November 2010. He was the coach at Iowa State from 1995 to 2006 and an assistant at Florida, South Florida, Wisconsin and Iowa.
