WACO, Texas (AP) -- Baylor is back on the field without Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III.

The Bears opened spring football practice Tuesday, just more than two months after winning in the Alamo Bowl and since Griffin announced he was bypassing his senior season for early entry in the NFL draft.

Rising senior Nick Florence and sophomore Bryce Petty are the primary candidates to replace Griffin as the starter. Florence stared seven games as a freshman in 2009 after Griffin injured his knee.

Coach Art Briles says he's looking for a quarterback who is productive, secures the football and has traits of being a great leader.

Florence says he hasn't been handed the job, and wouldn't want to get it that way.
