Iowa State's Gary gets probation in robbery case

AMES, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa State wide receiver Albert Gary has been sentenced to three years of probation for pleading guilty to first-degree theft.

Gary also pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of going armed with intent and was given a suspended sentence. Gary and others were charged with robbing a man on campus with a BB gun last June.

Gary's attorney, Matt Boles, said Gary will also have to go to a halfway house in Ames for roughly six months. Boles said it could take a few weeks for Gary to be admitted and he will be held there until he completes its program.

Gary was suspended last fall for three games because of the incident. Iowa State spokesman Tom Kroeschell says coach Paul Rhoads will address Gary's status after the university's judicial process is complete

Gary, a redshirt junior from Ocala, Fla., caught 23 passes in 2011 and recorded a team-high 109 receiving yards in Iowa State's 37-31 win over then-No. 2 Oklahoma State in November.

The Ames Tribune reports that teammate Devondrick Nealy was also charged in the attack. Nealy pleaded guilty to a simple misdemeanor charge of harassing a public officer in November. He was given a deferred judgment and a year of probation.
