Hawaii DTs carted off field, flash 'shaka' sign

PROVO, Utah (AP) -- Hawaii team officials said two Warriors players have been released from the hospital and on the team charter flight Friday night after X rays on their necks were normal.

The defensive tackles were taken to the hospital after being injured in apparent helmet-to-helmet collisions on consecutive series in the first quarter of a 47-0 loss to Brigham Young on Friday night.

Backup Geardon Hanohano was the first loaded on a backboard and carted off the field, but not before flashing a shaka - the Hawaiian greeting meaing "hang loose."

The second player, starting defensive tackle Siasau Matagiese, was injured on the Warriors' next defensive series. After a lengthy delay, he too was placed on a backboard and carted off. He also managed to signal the crowd with his thumb and little finger.

BYU officials late Friday said starting running back Michael Alisa is likely out for the rest of the regular season. He is scheduled to have surgery Saturday after breaking a bone in his right forearm in the first quarter. He finished with two carries for 12 yards.
