JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (AP) -- Jacksonville State has released football coach Jack Crowe from his contract with two years remaining.

Athletic director Warren Koegel announced the decision Friday, saying that "during this time of transition the expectations of our department remain the same."

Crowe, a former Arkansas head coach, led the Gamecocks to an 87-57 record over 13 seasons, including his third Ohio Valley Conference title in 2011.

He led the FCS program to the playoffs three times but didn't win a postseason game. The Gamecocks upset Mississippi two years ago but finished 6-5 this season.

He has the second-most wins in Jacksonville State history. Don Salls had 95 over 18 seasons.

Crowe said he felt like the program had progressed during his tenure but "there is still a lot left to be done."
