AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas will honor former football coach Darrell Royal with a public memorial on campus that is expected to draw several thousand people.

Royal coached the Longhorns from 1957 to 1976. His teams won 11 Southwest Conference championships, national championships in 1963 and 1969, and a share of a third in 1970. He also introduced the wishbone offense to college football in 1968.

Royal died in Austin on Nov. 7. He was 88.

Tuesday's memorial will be held at the Frank Erwin Center basketball arena and the public is invited to attend. The program starts at 1 p.m. EDT.

On Sunday, Royal's widow held a previously scheduled auction of some of the family's personal memorabilia. It raised more than $100,000 for the family and the Darrell K Royal Research Fund for Alzheimer's Disease.
