AP Pro32 comments about Chiefs
NEW YORK (AP) - Comments on the Kansas City Chiefs by the AP Pro32 panel (ranking in parentheses):
KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (21)
Chris Berman (ESPN, 22) - Bad start again.
Clifton Brown (Sporting News, 23) - Chiefs need to get healthier on defense. Giving up 40 points at home doesn't cut it.
Cris Collinsworth (NBC Sports, 24) - Chiefs defense missed Tamba Hali.
Rich Gannon (CBS Sports/SiriusXM NFL Radio, 19) - Need to improve pass D, getting Hali & Flowers back should help.
Bob Glauber (Newsday, 20) - Romeo Crennel did a good enough job in relief of Todd Haley late last season to get the head coaching gig full-time. But he has to get that defense in order, or else his run won't last very long.
Rick Gosselin (Dallas Morning News, 24) - The Chiefs get Pro Bowl pass rusher Tamba Hali back this week from suspension. They could also use Buck Buchanan, Curley Culp and Willie Lanier to fix this defense.
Clark Judge (CBSSports.com, 24) - There wasn't much good about that season opener, but patience, people: The Chiefs were torched for 40 in last year's first game and nearly recovered by the end of the season.
Ira Kaufman (Tampa Tribune, 24) - A coach with a defensive pedigree like Romeo Crennel had to cringe as Atlanta receivers ran wide open at Arrowhead.
Pat Kirwan (SiriusXM NFL Radio/CBSSports.com, 30) - KC had key injuries in the secondary and their best pass rusher was suspended. Matt Ryan took full advantage of the problems. The Chiefs defense isn't as bad as they were in Week 1 and the offense generated close to 400 yards and 24 points. I expect this team to move up quickly.
John Lynch (Fox Sports, 18) - The Chiefs get some major "juice" and playmaking ability back with the return of RB Jamal Charles, S Eric Berry and TE Tony Moeaki. QB Matt Cassel needs to return to his solid form of 2010. The problem is, the Chiefs ran into a buzz saw called the Atlanta Falcons.
Alex Marvez (Foxsports.com, 23) - The make-or-break season in quarterback Matt Cassel's NFL career didn't get off to a good start with a two-interception outing against Atlanta. The defense should improve as players get healthier and top pass-rusher Tamba Hali returns from a one-game NFL suspension.
Dan Pompei (Chicago Tribune, 15) - Losing to the Falcons in Atlanta was not as disturbing as the way in which the Chiefs lost.
