Jets' defense underwhelming, far from dominant

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - Rex Ryan expected this to be perhaps the best defense he has had since becoming coach of the New York Jets four years ago.

Instead, it has been a major disappointment and hardly the big, bad bunch the coach sold it as.

Although New York ranks 19th in overall defense, Ryan still won't concede that the Jets will finish worse than fifth. He realizes, though, that his group has lots of work to do and improvements to make in the last five games of the regular season.

New York is 30th in sacks with just 17, a number Ryan calls "alarming.'' Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine says he doesn't concern himself with statistics, but says the thing that bothers him most is the team's 4-7 record.
