WCWS: Defending champ ASU avoids elimination

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Defending champion Arizona State staved off elimination with a 6-0 win over LSU on Saturday night in the Women's College World Series.

The Sun Devils will have to beat No. 4 seed Oklahoma twice Sunday afternoon to advance to Monday's championship series. The Sooners (52-8) did not play on Saturday after beating South Florida Thursday and then California Friday.

The top-ranked Bears extended their season with a 6-3 win over Oregon. Having bounced back from each loss this season with a resounding win, the Bears (58-6) continued that trend following their 3-0 loss to No. 4 Oklahoma the day before.

Cal joins the other top three tournament seeds on Sunday to decide which two teams will advance to Monday's three-game championship series. The Bears will face Alabama.

Alix Johnson was a big part of two big ASU innings. In the third she broke a scoreless tie with a three-run home run on the first pitch from LSU starter Rachele Fico.

In the fifth, Johnson singled, stole second and scored along with Haley Steele, and Amber Freeman with the help of a single from Sam Parlich.

ASU starter Hillary Bach was called for five illegal pitches for lifting her pivot foot but settled down to finish the four-hitter. It was her 11th this season.

LSU ends its season at 40-25.

Cal jumped out to a quick lead when second baseman Jace Williams crushed a three-run home run on a 2-2 Jessica Moore offering in the first.

The Bears added two more in the second and another in the fourth when catcher Victoria Jones homered.

Cal pitcher Jolene Henderson improved to 38-3 tossing the complete game.

"My team has always been there for me," Henderson said after the win. "Even when they're not hitting they're behind me defensively."

Oregon (45-18) scored a run in the third on a Samantha Pappas home run and then two more in the sixth thanks to freshman Sara Goodrum's double.
