BEIJING (AP) -- Francesco Gavazzi used a late surge to win the third stage of the Tour of Beijing on Thursday, edging Daniel Martin and Edvald Boasson Hagen.

Defending champion Tony Martin still maintains a big lead over Gavazzi. The Omega Pharma-QuickStep rider, who took the lead after the second stage, is 40 seconds ahead of Gavazzi in the five-stage race.

Hagen appeared to have the stage in hand when he made a break with about two miles to go, but the World Road Championship silver medalist got tied up, allowing Gavazzi and Martin to beat him to the line.

Gavazzi won the 101-mile stage in 4 hours, 5 minutes, 8 seconds for his first stage victory. He finished second Wednesday.
