Tweddle to miss Euros after 'minor' knee surgery
NEWPORT, England (AP) Three-time world champion Beth Tweddle will miss next month's European gymnastics championships after having what was described as "minor" knee surgery.
Tweddle was left off Britain's squad for Europeans "to protect Beth's Olympic aspirations," and British Gymnastics officials say they are confident she will be "in first-class shape" for this summer's London Games. She had "keyhole" surgery Friday.
Tweddle sparked Britain's resurgence in gymnastics when she won the uneven bars at the 2006 world championships. It was the first world title for any British gymnast, male or female. She also won the world title on floor exercise in 2009, and added a second title on bars in 2010.
The women's European championships are May 9-13 in Brussels.
