LONDON (AP) Olympic champion Chris Hoy will not defend his individual sprint title at the London Games after the British cycling team instead selected Jason Kenny for the event.

Hoy will get to defend his titles in the keirin and team sprint but British Cycling's performance director Dave Brailsford says the decision to leave him out for the sprint would give the home country "the strongest team possible going into the games."

The 36-year-old Hoy, a four-time Olympic gold medalist, says he's "obviously disappointed" not to be defending all three of his track cycling titles from Beijing but adds "Jason thoroughly deserves this opportunity and has a great chance of success."

Kenny won the sprint at the 2011 world championships and was second at this year's worlds.
