LONDON (AP) - Ghana boxer and flagbearer Maxwell Amponsah has withdrawn from the Olympics after failing to recover from a broken jaw sustained in a qualifying fight two months ago.

Ghana's Olympic committee said Sunday its amateur boxing federation has pulled the heavyweight out of the London Games because the fracture from a bout in Morocco in May, which needed surgery, hasn't healed.

The committee says Amponsah could have "potential major complications if he re-fractures his jaw.''

Amponsah was initially cleared to go to the Olympics, but the Ghana Amateur Boxing Association and team doctor have chosen to "err on the side of caution and not jeopardize Maxwell's boxing career.''

Amponsah carried Ghana's flag at Friday's opening ceremony.
