Police take over Olympic security lead in Scotland

LONDON (AP) - Police in Scotland's biggest city say they have taken charge of security duties amid the failure of security contractor G4S to provide enough guards for the Summer Games.

The Strathclyde Police, which covers the city of Glasgow and much of western Scotland, said Friday they will now control security operations at a venue for the Olympic soccer competition, training centers and team camps.

In a statement, the police department said extra officers would be deployed, but that at this stage no military personnel would be required to help bolster security in Scotland.

Glasgow's Hampden Park stadium is hosting soccer matches, while Strathclyde University will be used as a training venue by soccer teams. Competitors in several sports from Namibia and Zambia are staying in Scotland for the duration of the Olympics.
