IndyCar adding 5-second delay to push-to-pass

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - IndyCar officials will introduce a 5-second delay for its push-to-pass system at this weekend's race at Mid-Ohio.

The decision means drivers can hit the overtake assist button before getting to a braking zone, then will be given extra power when they reach full throttle. Trevor Knowles, the series' director of engine development, says television will not show whether another driver is using the push-to-pass. Series officials are hoping the change will create more suspense.

IndyCar has been using the extra boost since 2009, giving drivers an additional 200 RPM.

Knowles says the series also will consider adding an overtake lockout-recharge button for future races.
