Police say Pennant arrested for alleged assault

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -- Police say Stoke winger Jermaine Pennant has been arrested in connection with an alleged assault.

Police in Manchester say Pennant was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a woman in a Manchester nightclub in the early hours of Sunday morning. The 29-year-old player was released on bail pending further investigation.

In a separate incident, Pennant was charged with drunk driving and driving without insurance after a minor traffic accident early Sunday.

The incidents occurred several hours after Pennant played in Stoke's 1-1 draw with his former club Arsenal.

Police said in a statement Wednesday that Pennant is due to appear in court May 9 to face the driving charges.
