Vancouver tops Edmonton in Canadian semis; Toronto, Montreal tie

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- Eric Hassli and Omar Salgado scored to help the Vancouver Whitecaps beat FC Edmonton 2-0 on Wednesday night in the first leg of the Canadian Championship semifinal.

The second game is next Wednesday in Vancouver.

The series winner will face the Toronto-Montreal winner.

Toronto FC 0, Montreal Impact 0

MONTREAL (AP) -- Off to a horrendous start to the Major League Soccer season, Toronto FC opened defense of the Canadian Championship with a 0-0 tie with the Montreal Impact on Wednesday night.

Toronto FC, 0-7 in MLS play, lost to Mexico's Santos Laguna last month in the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals.

The second game of the two-leg semifinal is next Wednesday in Toronto.

In the other semifinal, the Vancouver Whitecaps are playing Edmonton FC of the North American Soccer League.
