MUNICH (AP) -- Bayern Munich says Germany striker Mario Gomez has undergone surgery on his left ankle and will be out of action for three weeks.

Bayern says the 27-year-old Gomez had the operation on Tuesday. Club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfahrt says it went well but the player will likely have to wait until the end of the month before he can start training.

Gomez is the latest of several Bayern players to face an injury break before the Bundesliga season kicks off Aug. 24. They include defenders David Alaba, Rafinha and Diego Contento.

Gomez scored 43 goals for Bayern in all competitions last season, including 26 in the Bundesliga.
