Germany selects weakened squad for Argentina
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- Germany coach Joachim Loew has picked an under-strength squad to play Argentina in a friendly next week.
Lazio forward Miroslav Klose and Real Madrid midfielders Sami Khedira and Mesut Oezil were included Thursday, but captain Philipp Lahm, Bayern Munich teammates Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mario Gomez and Arsenal pair Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker will all miss the Aug. 15 match in Frankfurt.
Lahm is out because of the imminent birth of his child, while Schweinsteiger and Gomez are recovering from injury and Podolski and Mertesacker are preparing for the Aug. 18 start of the Premier League.
Borussia Dortmund midfielder Sven Bender and 18-year-old Schalke midfielder Julian Draxler were also included in the 19-player squad, but reserve goalkeeper Tim Wiese of Hoffenheim was dropped in favor of Hannover's Ron-Robert Zieler.
