PALERMO, Italy (AP) -- Palermo says it has fired coach Giuseppe Sannino and replaced him with Gian Piero Gasperini after just three matches of the new Serie A season.

The Sicilian club announced the news on its website, a day after drawing 1-1 with Cagliari and picking up its first point of the campaign.

Sannino only took charge of Palermo in June, signing a two-year contract. He steered Siena to 14th spot in Serie A last season in his first year as a topflight coach.

The 55-year-old Sannino failed to lead Palermo to a win in the league, losing to Napoli and Lazio.

Gasperini's last coaching job was a brief spell in charge of Inter Milan at the beginning of last season, but he was sacked in September after a dismal run of four defeats and a draw.
