BREMEN, Germany (AP) -- Former Germany midfielder Tim Borowski is retiring from football due to ongoing injury problems with his right ankle.

Werder Bremen says the 32-year-old Borowski is being forced to end his playing career after failing to recover from surgery following the October 2010 injury.

Borowski says "I had a wonderful time as a footballer with many great, emotional moments. I'll always keep that with me.''

Borowski made the majority of his 236 Bundesliga appearances for Bremen, though he also spent a season at Bayern Munich. He made 33 appearances for Germany.

Borowski's contract was not renewed beyond the end of last season, and he made a final, emotional, appearance for Bremen on the last day against Schalke.

He is in talks on a likely future role at the club.
