Sounders win spot in CONCACAF CL quarterfinals

SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras (AP) -- Sammy Ochoa, Eddie Johnson and Brad Evans scored and the Seattle Sounders beat Honduran club Marathon 3-2 on Wednesday and gained a spot in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League.

The winning goal came when Evans headed in a corner kick from Mario Roberto Martinez in the 77th minute for Seattle.

Seattle finished with nine points in Group Four.

Ochoa gave Seattle a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 11th minute.

Mario Berrios of Marathon tied it with a penalty kick in the 34th minute.

Eddie Johnson gave Seattle a lead in the 62th minute. The Marathon's Berrios tied it again with a second penalty kick five minutes later.

Both teams played two years ago with the Marathon getting a 2-1 win against the Sounders. And they will play again in Seattle on Oct. 24.

Galaxy, Islanders finish in scoreless draw

AYAMON, Puerto Rico (AP) -- The Los Angeles Galaxy and the Puerto Rico Islanders played to a 0-0 draw in a CONCACAF Champions League match Wednesday.

The tie left the Galaxy in the lead in Group 5 (2-0-1) play over Isidro Metapan. The Major League Soccer team will face El Salvador's Isidro Metapan (1-1), which is second, in its final group game on Oct. 25.

The Galaxy were without marquee strikers David Beckham and Robbie Keane, neither of whom made the trip to Puerto Rico.

Neither star played last month when the Galaxy beat the Islanders, of the North American Soccer League, 4-0 in their Aug. 29 CONCACAF match in California.

Beckham has been sidelined nearly three weeks with a sprained ankle.

The Galaxy and Islanders both had chances in the waning minutes, but couldn't find the back of the net.

"We didn't do a good job with the chances we created," Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said.

"But a point on the road is still good."

Puerto Rico kept Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Perk busy down the stretch.

"Their goalkeeper was busier. I think the clearer chances were for the Islanders tonight," Puerto Rico coach Adrian Whitbread said. "That says a lot against a team like the Galaxy."

Arena said the Galaxy failed to capitalize on late chances spurred by the entry of Landon Donovan and Vitor Pereira off the bench midway through the second half.

"We were sloppy with our chances. We weren't clinical in the box," he said.
