Dempsey makes first Spurs start in Europa League draw

(AP) -- Clint Dempsey had a goal disallowed because of an offside call in his first start for Tottenham, a 0-0 tie against Lazio on Thursday night in the first round of the Europa League.

Dempsey headed the ball in past goalkeeper Federico Marchetti in the 22nd minute off a cross from Gareth Bale, The American midfielder transferred from Fulham to Spurs on Aug. 31 and made his Tottenham debut as a 78th-minute substitute in Sunday's 3-1 win over Reading in the Premier League. He was replaced by Gylfi Sigurdsson in the 76th minute against Lazio.

Tottenham's Steven Caulker headed the ball into the net in the 70th minute at White Hart Lane, but the goal was disallowed for Caulker's push on Stefano Mauri.

Hugo Lloris made his Spurs' debut in goal, in place of regular starter Brad Friedel.

In a game that featured Americans on both sides, Rosenborg on 2-1 at Rapid Vienna. Terrence Boyd started for the hosts and Mix Diskerud for the visitors. Alejandro Bedoya started and received a yellow card in Helsingborgs' 1-0 loss at Levante, and Steve Cherundolo went the distance in Hannover's 2-2 tie at Twente.

Defending champion Atletico Madrid won 3-0 at Hapoel Tel-Aviv on goals by Cristian Rodriguez, Diego Costa and Raul Garcia. The visitors rested star forward Radamel Falcao.

Three-time champion Liverpool won 5-3 at Young Boys in Switzerland. Liverpool built a 2-1 lead on a fourth-minute own goal by Juhani Ojala and a 40th-minute goal by teenager Andre Wisdom, who was making his debut. The hosts, who got a 38th-minute goal from Raphael Nuzzolo, took a 3-2 lead when Ojala scored in the 52nd and Eulogio Zarate in the 63rd. Sebastian Coates tied the score in the 67th, and Jonjo Shelvey -- who entered in the 66th -- scored in the 76th and 88th minutes.

Inter Milan, also seeking a fourth title, needed Yuto Nagatomo's goal in the second minute of stoppage time for a 2-2 tie against visiting Rubin Kazan. The Russian team went ahead in the 17th when goalkeeper Samir Handanovic saved Bibras Natkho's penalty kick and Aleksandr Ryazantsev scored on the rebound. Teenager Marko Livaja tied it in the 39th with his first goal for Inter, but Salomon Rondon put Rubin back ahead in the 84th.

French league leader Marseille needed goals from Mathieu Valbuena in the 83rd and Andre Ayew in the fourth minute of stoppage time - the final kick of the game - for a 2-2 tie at Fenerbahce. The hosts built their lead on goals by Caner Erkin in the 28th and Alex in the 57th.

Antonio Di Natale scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time to give Udinese a 1-1 home tie against Russia's Anzhi Makhachkala.

Last season's runner-up, Athletic Bilbao, was held to a 1-1 draw at home by Hapoel Kiryat Shmona. Napoli cruised to a 4-0 win over AIK Stockholm, with Edu Vargas scoring a hat-trick -- his first goals for the Italian club. Napoli's Marek Hamsik was ejected in the 74th.
