MADRID (AP) -- Spanish club Espanyol says it has hired Mexican veteran Javier Aguirre as coach to replace the fired Mauricio Pochettino.

Espanyol is in last place in the Spanish league with nine points from 13 games.

The club says "Javier Aguirre has become Espanyol's new coach until the 30th of June of next year.''

Aguirre last coached Real Zaragoza, a job he held until December 2011, but has also coached Mexico's national team and previously coached Spanish clubs Atletico Madrid and Osasuna.
