Tunisia asks to wear black armbands in quarters

BONGOVILLE, Gabon (AP) -The president of the Tunisian Football Federation says his team has asked for permission to wear black armbands in its African Cup of Nations quarterfinal as a mark of respect for the people that died this week at a league game in Egypt.

Anouar Haddad says the Tunisians want to wear the armbands in Sunday's match against Ghana because of the country's "brotherly'' ties with Egypt.

Haddad says he has not yet received a reply from tournament organizers the Confederation of African Football, but expects the request to be considered at a meeting on Saturday. CAF had already said a minute's silence would be observed ahead of all four quarterfinals.

More than 70 people died in the clashes at Wednesday's game in Egypt's Mediterranean city of Port Said.
