AUXERRE, France (AP) -Struggling Auxerre fired coach Laurent Fournier following the 2-0 home defeat to Evian, replacing him with Jean-Guy Wallemme.

Following Sochaux's 2-0 win against Nice on Sunday, Auxerre dropped down to last in the French league and is five points from safety with 10 rounds remaining.

The team announced on its website that club President Gerard Bourgoin called a meeting Sunday morning to inform the players that Fournier, who took charge at the start of the season, had made way for former Lens coach Wallemme.

"I'm sad, very disappointed for him. We (the players) are responsible for the coach getting fired,'' Auxerre defender Cedric Hengbart said on RMC radio. "You can sack a coach but never the players; it was an easy way to make a point. I'm sorry he's gone.''

Auxerre, which played in the Champions League last season, has not won a league game since the resumption of the league after its winter break, and has yet to win away from home.

Fans protested before Saturday's game, calling for the entire board to resign.
