RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -Doctors say they have controlled the infection that has kept former FIFA president Joao Havelange in the hospital for nearly a month.

The Hospital Samaritano said in a statement Friday the 95-year-old Havelange remains under antibiotic treatment but the infection on his right ankle is now under control.

Doctors say Havelange is in stable condition and continues to improve, although there is no timetable on his possible release.

Havelange was hospitalized on March 18 for septic arthritis, a serious bacterial infection that affects joints. He spent several days in intensive care and his health deteriorated earlier this week after heart and breathing problems.

Havelange presided over FIFA from 1974-98 and resigned from the IOC last year, avoiding a possible suspension for allegedly taking kickbacks from a former FIFA partner.
