MADRID (AP) -Cristiano Ronaldo set a new Spanish league record after scoring his 41st goal of the season in Real Madrid's 3-1 victory over Sporting Gijon on Saturday.

Ronaldo surpassed his own record of 40 goals, which he set last season, by heading home Angel di Maria's cross in the 74th minute at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

The Portugal forward, who leads Barcelona forward Lionel Messi by two goals this season, can further add to his tally with five more games remaining for the Spanish leaders.

Ronaldo's goal helped Madrid reach 107 goals scored for the season, which matches the record mark set by the Spanish giant in 1989-90. Substitute Karim Benzema scored the third goal to equal the record after Gonzalo Higuain had scored Madrid's opener.

Madrid can set the record next Saturday at the Camp Nou when it faces three-time defending champion Barcelona in a match likely to decide the league champions.
