LONDON (AP) -Ryan Bertrand and Jonjo Shelvey have been called up to the England squad for the upcoming qualifiers against San Marino and Poland after Kieran Gibbs was forced to withdraw because of a thigh injury.

Bertrand is a like-for-like replacement for Gibbs at left back and will be an understudy to Chelsea teammate Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines.

Shelvey, who has become a regular pick in Liverpool's midfield this season, may have been drafted in as cover Monday for Frank Lampard after the Chelsea stalwart limped off midway through the second half of Saturday's Premier League win over Norwich.

England, which is level on four points with Montenegro and Poland after two qualifiers in Group H, hosts San Marino on Friday and takes on the Poles away next Tuesday.
