SUNDERLAND, England (AP) -Demba Ba scored a late own goal as Sunderland escaped with a point from a 1-1 draw with 10-man Newcastle in a feisty north-east derby in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Senegal striker is the league's joint-top scorer this season with six goals, but he deflected the ball into his own net in the 86th minute following Sebastian Larsson's whipped free kick that was glanced on by John O'Shea.

Newcastle took the lead in the third minute through France international Yohan Cabaye but was reduced to 10 men in the 25th when tough-tackling midfielder Cheick Tiote was given a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on Steven Fletcher.

The point lifted Newcastle above Liverpool into 11th place after eight games. Sunderland stayed 14th.
