Fluminense wins 4th Brazilian league title
SAO PAULO (AP) -Fluminense won its second Brazilian title in three years by beating Palmeiras 3-2 after a pair of goals by league-leading scorer Fred on Sunday.
Fred scored in each half to give Fluminense the title with three rounds left. It is the team's fourth national title, adding to triumphs in 2010, 1984 and 1970.
Ronaldinho's Atletico Mineiro needed to beat Vasco da Gama to extend its title chances, but could only manage a 1-1 draw.
Atletico Mineiro was seeking its first championship since 1971. It dropped to third place in the standings after Gremio came from behind to defeat Sao Paulo 2-1 thanks to a winner by Bolivia striker Marcelo Moreno.
The loss to Fluminense leaves Palmeiras even closer to relegation. It is seven points from safety.
